A book which shook me to my very core was The Trial by Franz Kafka. I remember reading it with great passion and anxiety. The main character of the book Josef K. is being arrested one morning without having done anything against the law, but almost straight away he is released. He is told that he needs to wait for instructions about his trial from the Committee of Affairs but he is not told the day of his trial and what his charges are.
He then starts wondering about his trial and tries to find why he is being charged and when.
It is a book about the power of the law, the authorities and bureaucracy. Through this book Kafka critises the power of authority and how people feel week against it, without event the hope of resisting and finally the ultimate crush of a person's rights and will to live.
It is a strong book and sometimes quite difficult to understand. But I remember though when reading it that I not only felt sorry for him but also I could see myself in his shoes in many occasions of his short life.
This book is an inspiration to me in a way of trying to be alert. To see and try to make a life in which I will feel free and not restricted in any way by any one. It shares my notion towards any sort of law enforcement and establishment.
